U is for Updyke: Farmers they were. Prosperous farmers. Look at the size of the house, and (more importantly) the barn. It's a typical Pennsylvania bank barn; that's obvious from the lane that leads out back. It goes to the backside of the barn so you can enter on the second floor. Hay up top, animals down below. And, there is something else that is so Pennsylvanian about this tableau: the house and the barn are right on the main road.
