Log Cabins Forever: That cabin is big enough for the whole family. Who wants the room upstairs? Who wants to build a treehouse in the branches overhead? Who wants to claim the front porch? A month of cabins has come to an end. Make sure you caught them all. Newville Cemetery. [2015]
Welcome to the underWorld! But, we will concentrate on what's on the surface: the living landscapes of the dead. All photographs taken by me, D.J.Z.

Griffin, Georgia, USA
Log Cabins Forever: "Let us go up to the mountain of the Lord." Just follow that stream to its source, and a whole new world will be yours. Once you get there, though, you won't be coming back to the old cabin anymore. Yet, how could a memory of the place you called home be any sweeter? New Oak Cemetery. [2014]

Woodstown, New Jersey, USA
Log Cabins Forever: That might be the cabin they loved so much, or it might just be a rendition of how they saw themselves when they visited the lake. It might also be the image of heaven they cultivated over many years together. There they are on the other side of the lake, but do they look worried about getting back to their earthly digs? Lawnside Cemetery. [2015]

Andalusia, Alabama
Log Cabins Forever: Hardly anybody today can claim to have been born in a log cabin, but everyone can lay claim to one in paradise. The log cabin has become a symbol of the frontier roots of American independence and self-sufficiency. The next frontier is the great beyond. Stone Lake Gardens. [2017]

Strinestown, Pennsylvania
Log Cabins Forever: Around Strinestown, there are no mountains like the ones on this headstone. In fact, the winters end up being more rain and slush than a continuous blanket of white. That doesn't matter though. The cabin and its setting are renditions of what's in the mind, not what's on the ground. Strinestown Cemetery. [2014]

Fultonham, Ohio
Log Cabins Forever: Many log cabins anchored the newly planted farmsteads in the Old Northwest. They have almost all disappeared from the landscape; but, there are still a few places where their memories are preserved. Seriously, though, no one would trade today's world for the world portrayed here, right? Fultonham Cemetery. [2016]

Charleston, Illinois
Log Cabins Forever: "Harry and Nan are sleeping side by side and their spirits are roaming with the blessed." He would have been in his 20s when he fought for the G.A.R. She would have been at home with her parents, probably (like him) on the Illinois prairie. This log cabin may be where their life together started. She was clearly devoted to her husband and to perpetuating the memory of the "Northern" cause. How do we know? She was a member of the Women's Relief Corps. Mound Cemetery. [2017]

Geneva, Alabama
Log Cabins Forever: Because they succumb so easily to fire, rot, and demolition, not many authentic log cabins survive on the American landscape. If you patch one onto your headstone, however, it will last for eternity. This one seems still to be occupied, and someone must be feeding the dog (and the dog's nemesis). Geneva Cemetery. [2017]
